Taken separately, workers’ compensation laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) represent complicated laws that are often difficult for employers and employees alike to figure out. Small businesses are feeling slightly more confident in the economy, but one of the nation's largest organizations representing them says that there is "no sign of a surge."

With less than a month to go, California businesses are eager to qualify for a new state income tax credit. The "California Competes" program, administered by the state Office of Business and Economic Development, is handing out $30 million to encourage companies to grow here and not leave the state. While many applications can meet the needs of this segment, including the lower tier versions of QuickBooks Online, Xero, and Kashoo, two popular applications which are designed for non-accountants who need to accumulate transaction data are FreshBooks and Sage One.

Sage North America has introduced its new Sage Exchange Payment Management System, which is designed to help small and midsized businesses (SMBs) by consolidating all of their payment activity onto one platform. SMBs can also use Sage Exchange to easily monitor and manage the payments from all their sales environments: on the web, over the phone, through mobile devices, or at their storefront.

These applications are low cost or free, and are supported with in-application ads and other special offers provided based on the user’s personal profile. Since they are stored online, the data can be shared with outside advisors, including the individual’s accounting firm.
