The American Institute of CPAs has awarded its Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students to 92 outstanding students for the 2018-2019 academic year, totaling $461,000. The awards are part of AICPA’s ongoing efforts to promote diversity in the accounting profession.

“These scholarships serve a dual purpose. By providing talented students with funding for their education, the AICPA is strengthening the pipeline of talent entering the profession, as well as helping to increase diversity in accounting,” said Joanne Fiore, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants vice president of professional media, academic and student engagement.

The 92 awardees, each of whom have a minimum GPA of 3.0, at least 30 college credit hours, and at least six credit hours of accounting courses, were selected by a group of AICPA Student Recruitment Committee members and CPA volunteers.

The Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students is one of several AICPA initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in the accounting profession. In addition to seeking to increase the number of underrepresented minorities entering the profession, these efforts focus on fostering a workplace that is reflective and inclusive of the communities in which they serve.

Applications for the Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students are assessed according to academic achievement, leadership and overall commitment to pursuing a CPA license. The scholarship is open to ethnic minorities (including but not limited to: Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; Native American; Pacific Islander; or Asian American) who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate-level degree in an accounting or accounting-related major. Students who receive the scholarship become part of the AICPA Legacy Scholars program, which aims to encourage and empower the profession’s future leaders.

More information about the Legacy Scholars Program and other scholarships offered to accounting students is available online at ThisWaytoCPA.com. Applications for the 2019-2020 AICPA scholarships will open on December 1, 2018.
