Assistant Professor at USC Awarded AICPA-CIMA Best Early Career Researcher Award

The American Institute of CPAs and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants recently awarded the 2013 Best Early Career Researcher Award to David Erkens, an assistant professor of accounting at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. The award was granted in collaboration with the Management Accounting Section of the AAA.

The award was presented at the AAA’s annual in Anaheim, Calif. by Steve Matzke, AICPA director, faculty & university initiatives, and Michal Matejka, Ph.D., chair of the AAA awards selection committee, Harvey and Missy Jabara Family Accounting Professorship, W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, Tempe. The $2,000 grant award is given to the researcher with the best overall body of research in management accounting. Eligible research must have been completed within the first five years of joining a faculty. 

Erkens received the award based on his combined research contributions to accounting research on management control and corporate governance, all within five years of earning his Ph.D. His work examines the choice of performance measures in incentive contracts, the use of equity compensation in R&D-intensive firms, the value of corporate governance during the financial crisis and the role of accounting financial experts on audit committees.
